Good silk sarees can last for generations with a little care.
- Dry clean only. Never machine wash silk or zari sarees.
- Air them out. After wearing, let the saree breathe in shade for a few hours before folding.
- Store in muslin. Wrap each saree in a soft muslin or cotton cloth — never plastic, which traps moisture.
- Refold regularly. Change the folds every two to three months so the zari does not crack along the creases.
- Keep away from perfume. Spray perfume before you drape, not on the fabric.
- Use neem or cloves, not naphthalene. Natural repellents protect silk without leaving stains.
A little attention keeps the colour rich and the zari bright for decades.
